There are many ways to answer this question.  Your NEU-ION sales representative will work with you each step of the way to ensure we determine the right system for your purified water needs. But to begin this process, here are a few questions to consider.

  1. What final water quality standards do you need to meet?
  2. How much pure water will you need in a 24 hour period?
  3. Do you have a minimum flow or pressure rate requirement?
  4. Are there any logistical issues to consider for the system’s location?
  5. What is your anticipated budget?
  6. Are you interested in a single point of use system or feeding multiple drops/equipment?

The incoming city water quality and the amount of pure water needed are the two most important factors that will help determine this answer.

If your incoming total dissolved solids is less than 350 microsiemens and you are using greater than 3000 gallons of pure water in a month, then it becomes more cost effective to install a Reverse Osmosis Machine ahead of your portable exchange DI system. This will lengthen the life of the portable exchange deionization tanks as the Reverse Osmosis membranes will remove 98-99% of the dissolved ions.

Separate bed DI consists of one cation tank and one anion tank, also called Dual bed DI. This combination is used when a higher QUANTITY of DI water is required or when the water quality requirement is no greater than 1 megohm/cm. Separate bed DI systems are often used for small humidifiers, incubators and some washers.

Mixed bed DI is a mix of both cation and anion resin inside the tank and is used when a higher QUALITY of DI water is required for the application. Mixed bed DI water is more aggressive with the final water quality measuring up to 18 megohm/cm, removing all dissolved ions in the water.  Mixed Bed DI is often used in medical applications, life science/biotech research and manufacturing, pharmaceutical and electronics, clean steam humidification, and general laboratories.

Ultraviolet water treatment is the most widely recognized, proven and commonly used method of disinfection in pure water systems. Utilizing a 254nm wavelength and a dosage of 30,000 microwatt-seconds per squared centimeter is more than enough to destroy most water-borne microorganisms. UV water treatment is also used for TOC reduction, chlorine destruction & ozone destruction, but different UV wavelengths and contact time are required depending on what is the required final water quality.
